about

bits & pages is a blog for database enthusiasts and developers who are curious to learn more about data systems.

The authors are Almog Gavra and Apurva Mehta. We’ve worked together for a decade, having worked on significant production data systems like Apache Kafka, SlateDB, LinkedIn Search, Yahoo Object Storage, Apache Pinot, and more.

our three post types

  1. theory: these posts will cover how to think about data systems at large and the commonalities between the nine different types of databases.

  2. tear-downs: these posts look at existing systems and map them to the concepts covered by the theoretical posts.

  3. build-ups: these posts get hands on with data structures and indexes, showing code and running benchmarks.
